Carajillo

A coffee cocktail that may be even better (and easier) than an espresso martini. All you need is espresso and Licor 43!

Espresso martinis are cute and all, but have you tried a Carajillo?! It’s easier to make with only two ingredients and feels just a little more special and seasonal than a regular espresso martini.

A classic Carajillo is just equal parts espresso and Licor 43. The modern Mexican style is made by shaking those two simple ingredients with ice so it gets a little frothy. But you can also enjoy it stirred or hot by skipping the ice and using freshly brewed espresso. On the flip side, you can also whip it up in to a Frozen Carajillo.

There are endless ways to enjoy a Carajillo, but there’s perhaps no better way than adding a splash of tequila (just me?)

What is Licor 43?

Licor 43 is one of those liqueurs that really flies under the radar. It’s a golden-colored Spanish liqueur with notes of vanilla, citrus, and spices. It’s called Licor 43 because it’s made with 43 ingredients! You can already see why you need to buy a bottle and start adding it to literally every cocktail (or at least your morning coffee?!).

Carajillo Variations

Frozen Carajillo

Heat wave cocktails are some of my favorite cocktails, so say hello to your new BFF the Frozen Carajillo 👋🏼 It’s basically a boozy frappuccino. Just add espresso, Licor 43, and 1 cup of ice to a blender and blend until smooth.

Pumpkin Spiced Carajillo

The flavors of Licor 43 lend themselves to fall flavors, like pumpkin spice. Try this “Deadly Carajillo” for a fall twist on the classic.

Spicy Carajillo

Since the Carajillo has Mexican and Spanish origins, it only feels right to add a little heat to the party. You can do this in a couple ways, all of which are correct and delicious. Try the full recipe for a Spicy Carajillo.

Add Your Favorite Spirit

Whenever I make a Carajillo, I pretty much always add tequila. I switch up the ratios sometimes depending on my mood, but start with adding 1 oz. and go from there.
