Dirty Margatini

A Dirty Margatini is exactly what it sounds like: a Margarita meets a Dirty Martini.
The Dirty Margatini takes everything you love about a classic Margarita (bright lime, tequila, a hint of sweetness) and gives it the savory, briny twist of a Dirty Martini. It’s citrusy, salty, a little bitter, and honestly… dangerously good.
This is one of those cocktails that feels fancy but is secretly very easy to make at home. Perfect for happy hour, dinner parties, or when you want something a little unexpected.

How to Make a Dirty Margatini
- To a cocktail shaker add tequila, olive brine, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, agave syrup, and bitters.
- Add ice and shake hard for 15 seconds. You don’t want to over dilute, just enough to chill and slightly dilute.
- Double strain into a chilled martini or nick and nora glass rimmed with a little salt.
- Garnish with: Olives, Orange Twist, and/or olive oil on top!
Tips for Making the Best Dirty Margatini
- Use a good olive brine: Castelvetrano olives are chef’s kiss here
- Balance is everything: If it tastes too briny, add a touch more lime
- Chill your glass: This drink is meant to be crisp and cold
- Don’t over shake: You’re not making a margarita on the rocks, keep it tight and elegant

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- The perfect summer night cap: When the nights cool down a little and you want to enjoy a crisp cocktail outside after dinner, the Dirty Margatini is the perfect blend of refreshing and sophisticated.
- 2-in-1 Classic: If you love margaritas, this recipe has all the elements about it that you love. But especially for those who need a lot of salt on their rim, adding olive brine like in a dirty martini brings the salty, brininess you’re craving.
- Easy and fancy at the same time: Martinis are the epitome of chic whereas margaritas are sometimes seen as that easy-sipping party drink. Well, the Dirty Margatini is a little but of both – as easy to make as it is to drink, and you’ll feel good sipping it, pinkies up.
Dirty Margatini Variations
- Swap the tequila for mezcal if you want to try a smokier version to balance out the saltiness with a little more savory flavor.
- More Martini Vibes: Use vodka or gin instead of tequila to lean more into the martini flavors and less into the margarita flavors.
- Swap the brine. I love using pickle brine in dirty martinis and margaritas (like this Spicy Pickle Margarita), so give it a try instead of the olive brine.

- 3 oz tequila blanco
- 1 oz olive brine
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1.5 oz fresh lime juice
- 1.5 oz orange liqueur
- 1 oz agave syrup
- Pinch of flaky sea salt
Optional Garnishes
- Green olives
- Lime wheel
- Olive oil drizzle
- Salted rim
How to Make It
- Add tequila, olive brine, olive oil, lime juice, orange liqueur, agave, and sea salt to a cocktail shaker.
- Fill with ice and shake HARD until the olive oil fully emulsifies and the cocktail becomes slightly frothy and silky.
- Strain into a chilled coupe or rocks glass over fresh ice.
- Garnish with olives, a lime wheel, or a tiny extra drizzle of olive oil on top.
Jules’ Tips
- Use a bright, peppery olive oil for the best flavor. A grassy extra virgin olive oil works beautifully here.
- Castelvetrano olive brine gives the cocktail a softer buttery saltiness, while classic martini olive brine makes it punchier and dirtier.
- Shake longer than you think. The olive oil needs time to emulsify into the drink properly.
Make It Spicy
Add:
- 2 to 3 jalapeño slices to the shaker
or - A few dashes of chili oil for a spicy dirty margarita variation.
Why Olive Oil Works in Cocktails
Olive oil adds texture, richness, and a silky mouthfeel that makes cocktails feel fuller and more luxurious without making them heavy. Combined with citrus and salt, it creates an almost savory cocktail experience that feels right at home alongside tacos, salty snacks, or a martini-loving happy hour crowd.
