Mulled Wine (Glühwein)

As it starts to get really chilly outside, that craving for a warm, spiced red wine seems to take over. Whenever I take that first sip of mulled wine of the season I’m transported to a magical European Christmas market. This mulled wine recipe makes me want to throw on some mittens and make snow angels. But… I live in San Diego so I’ll just have to pretend.
Mulled wine is such a classic holiday drink that I have to make it every year. Glühwein (the German word for mulled wine) is my family’s holiday staple and even when I double the recipe, it’s gone by the end of the night. It’s traditionally a gently warmed red wine with mulling spices, sugar, and citrus, but I also add cognac for an added depth of flavor. You can mix everything in a pot on the stove top or, better yet, fire up that crockpot and let it do it’s thing for several hours. Either way, you’ll be left with enough comforting Glühwein to get you through many cold winter nights. Prost!

Make it With Me
- To a stock pot, add red wine, oranges, spices, sugar, cognac (or brandy), fresh cranberries, and water to dilute (optional).
- Set the pot on medium heat for 3-5 minutes, giving it a little stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Reduce the heat to a light simmer to keep the mulled wine warm until you’re ready to enjoy.
- Serve warm and garnish with an orange slice.
Crockpot Mulled Wine

Making mulled wine in a crockpot is a no-brainer, especially if you’re busy preparing the food and getting the house ready for guests. I also always seem to be running out of space on my stovetop during the holidays, so slow cooker mulled wine frees up a much-needed burner. Here’s how to make Gluhwein in a crockpot:
- To a crockpot, add in all the same ingredients and stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Cover the crockpot and set it to LOW for 1–1.5 hours, or until fragrant and warmed through.
- Once warm, switch to the WARM setting to serve.
- Ladle your Gluhwein into mugs and garnish with an orange slice (and a few cranberries if you’re feeling festive!)

Ingredients
- 2 bottles Red wine
- 2-3 Oranges
- 8-10 Cloves
- 3-5 Cardamom pods
- 3-4 Cinnamon Sticks
- 1/2 cup Sugar
- 1 cup Cognac or brandy
- 1.25 cups Water to dilute (optional)
- Fresh cranberries (optional)
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients to a stock pot and put on medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring, until the sugar dissolves.
- Put on a light summer to keep warm.
- Serve warm and garnish with an orange slice.
