I’m calling it now: the non-alcoholic drink of 2026 is the Agua Fresca. By blending up some fresh fruit (whatever’s in season) with water and a little sweetener, you have your own refreshing homemade drink that will definitely be the first thing to run out the next time you host. The hotter the day, the more it calls for Pineapple Passion Fruit Agua Fresca.

How to Make Agua Fresca
- Add the pineapple, passion fruit pulp, lime juice, agave, sea salt, and 2 cups of the water to a blender.
- Blend until completely smooth.
- Strain through a fine mesh sieve if you prefer a smoother agua fresca, or leave it unstrained for more texture.
- Stir in the remaining 2 cups of cold water.
- Taste and adjust with more agave, lime juice, or water as needed.
- Serve over plenty of ice and garnish with pineapple, mint, and lime.
What is Agua Fresca
Agua fresca, which translates to “fresh water” in Spanish, is a light, refreshing drink made by blending fresh fruit with water and a touch of sweetener. Unlike juice, it’s lighter and less concentrated because it’s diluted with more water. Agua Fresca is different from smoothies in that it’s lighter and thinner without added dairy and is typically strained for smooth sip. Unlike both juice and smoothies, agua fresca is usually served over ice.
Agua Fresca Ingredients
Fresh Fruit
In this recipe, I’m using fresh pineapple and passion fruit because my sister has a bunch of extra passion fruit from her tree right now! If you can’t find fresh passion fruit you can use frozen puree, or just use pineapple or swap it for mango. The best thing about this drink is that you can make it with whatever fresh fruit is in season near you. Try is with berries, melons, stone fruit, and tropical fruit.
Agave Syrup
Added syrup isn’t always required for agua fresca, but I like the little extra touch of sweetness, especially if the fruit I’m using, like passion fruit aren’t particularly sweet. You can use store-bought agave syrup or make your own homemade simple syrup.
Lime Juice
If it’s not fresh squeezed, we don’t want it! Depending on the fruit you choose, you can use lemon or lime juice.
Tips for Making the Best Agua Fresca
- Don’t skip the pinch of salt; it makes the fruit taste even sweeter.
- Adjust the water to make it lighter or more concentrated.
- Make it boozy: Add tequila for a tropical margarita, white rum for a daiquiri-inspired drink, or prosecco for an easy spritz. My personal favorite? A Mezcalita with a spicy salt rim!
- Use frozen passion fruit: It’s available year-round and works just as well as fresh. Otherwise, use ripe, in-season fruit for the best flavor.
- Serve it sparkling: Replace 1–2 cups of water with sparkling water just before serving.
- Make it ahead: Refrigerate for up to 2 days and stir well before serving.
Why You’ll Love an Agua Fresca
- Agua fresca is a great seltzer alternative. Sometimes I get really sick of seltzer or I want something non-alcoholic that’s not carbonated. Agua fresca is really easy to make and you can patch a whole pitcher of it to last the week.
- Agua fresca is also a great juice substitute. It’s lighter and only made with water and fruit plus a little lime juice and however much sweetener you want, so you can control the amount of sugar.
- It’s a really easy batch drink for hosting when you want to offer a non-alcoholic option. You don’t even have to offer anything other than the agua fresca. Simply set out some bottles of Prosecco and whatever spirits you have so guests can DIY their own cocktail.
