When it comes to classic cocktails, few can rival the timelessness of the Old Fashioned. Its simple yet sophisticated combination of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters has remained a staple in the cocktail world for generations. Now, say hello to the Freezer Door Old Fashioned. Batching is one of my favorite ways to make classic booze forward cocktails because all you have to do is make it in the bottle and throw it in the freezer. Then you’re ready to pour and sip solo or whenever the guests arrive.

What is an Old Fashioned?
The Old Fashioned is timeless for a reason. Just three ingredients, no fluff, all flavor. It’s bold, warming, and perfect for slow sipping. Whether you’re making it for a cozy night in, a pre-dinner drink, or someone who says, “I don’t like cocktails, I just like bourbon,” — this one always delivers.
The beauty of the Old Fashioned is its simplicity. It highlights the bourbon, adds just enough sweetness from syrup, and gets a touch of spice and depth from Angostura bitters. There’s no citrus juice, no shaking… just balance.
The trick is using a syrup that complements your bourbon. A classic simple syrup works, but you can easily play with flavor here. I’ve gone for a combo of demerara and cherry syrup for my Freezer Door Old Fashioned recipe. I also add orange bitters to play up the citrus notes.

Freezer Door
Ingredients
- 1 bottle bourbon or rye (minus 6oz.)
- 2 oz. demerara syrup
- 1 oz. cherry syrup
- 3/4 oz. angostura bitters
- 1/2 oz. orange bitters
- 1-2 oz. water for dilution (I like to let mine mellow with ice but it’s up to you as it’s pretty boozy!)
- 1 orange peel, optional
Instructions
- Grab a full bottle of rye or bourbon and pour out 6 oz, shoot it back or save it!
- Add all of the ingredients into the rye or bourbon bottle.
- Mix together and place in the freezer.
- For serving, pour 3 oz. over a large a cube, garnish, and enjoy!
More Bourbon Cocktails

There are many different size bottles of bourbon and rye. The ratio of other ingredients should correspond to the amount of the liquor. What size bottle of bourbon/rye is this recipe appropriate for? And do you have a preferred / favorite bourbon?
I wondered the same thing, so I started with a 750 mL bottle of bourbon because those measurements seemed right compared to other recipes that I’ve seen. It works out great with that bottle size. Also, if you pause the Instagram reel, you can see that Jules is using a 750 mL bottle also. When I make a batch, I back off of the two syrup measurements a little, and add 2 ounces of water to the bottle. It is a great recipe though, and I always like having a bottle in the freezer door ready to go!
a bottle in the freezer at all times never fails! Glad you like this one, it’s a favorite of mine personally and great for entertaining!
