Limoncello is a traditional Italian lemon liqueur most closely associated with Southern Italy, particularly the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, and Capri. It’s made from steeping lemon peels in a strong, neutral alcohol like Everclear along with a decent amount of simple syrup. Traditionally, limoncello is made with a very high-proof spirit, but vodka works totally fine for a softer, more approachable version.

Served ice cold, limoncello is often enjoyed after dinner as a digestif, but in recent years it’s become increasingly popular in spritz cocktails like the Classic Limoncello Spritz. Homemade limoncello also makes for the perfect holiday gift for friends and family or whoever is hosting the holiday parties this year.

How to Make Homemade Limoncello

  1. Add lemon peels and Everclear (or vodka) to a large jar.
  2. Let it infuse for 30 days in a cool dark place like the pantry or cupboard.
  3. Strain out the peels.
  4. Make a simple syrup by heating equal parts sugar and water until dissolved, then cool.
  5. Combine syrup with infused vodka, to taste.
  6. Let it rest for another week.
  7. Place in the freezer before serving.

Tips for Making the Best Homemade Limoncello

  • Use organic lemons if you can (you’re using the peel, after all)
  • Taste before adding all the syrup so you can control the sweetness better
  • Store in the freezer so it gets that classic silky, icy texture

How to Use Homemade Limoncello

  • Gift it to people! No one’s face lights up more than someone who receives a bottle of limoncello for Christmas or their birthday. It’s also the perfect thing to bring to a holiday party so you don’t show up empty handed.
  • Make cocktails! Use your homemade Limoncello in a Classic Limoncello Spritz, “Italian Margarita,” Bianco Negroni, Lemon Meringue Martini, or this super popular Olive Oil Basil Limoncello Sour.
  • Sip it straight! Just like the Italians, you can sip your Limoncello straight for aperitivo hour or as an after dinner cleanser.
