Ep. 20 The Sober Preacher's feature - The Ramos Gin Fizz & The Violet Fizz

Welcome to the episode 20 of The Art of Drinking with Join Jules and Your Favorite Uncle

What are we drinking?

A drink invented by a preacher who didn’t drink, it must be good. This drink is the holy grail of brunch drinks and it’s hard to stop at just one, but don’t let Henry catch you drinking too many.

Uncle Brad’s Recipe

What do I need?

  • Gin - any good gin will do, if you’ve found a favorite, use that - i’m using plymouth

  • Lemons - fresh lemon juice

  • Limes - fresh lime juice

  • Sugar for simple

  • Orange flower water

  • Eggs - egg white

  • Heavy cream  - settle down, it’s good for you

  • Soda water - I love my soda stream

  • Eye dropper

  • Boston shaker - 28/18oz tin on tin

  • Hawthorn strainer

  • Mesh strainer

  • 2oz/1oz jigger

  • 1/2oz & 3/4oz jigger

  • Chilled Collins glass

How do I make it?

Ok, you’ve been shaking drinks for a while now, you should have some good arm strength and stamina… you’ll need it

You also know… put your glass in the freezer and get it nice and cold

Juice your lemon, you need a half ounce

Juice your lime, you need a half ounce

In your shaker, big side add

  • Egg white - why first, because if you screw up

  • 2oz gin

  • ½ oz lime

  • ½ oz lemon

  • ¾ oz rich Simple syrup (or 1 oz of regular simple)

  • 6 drops Orange flower water

  • Hit it with a few drops (2) of vanilla extract

  • ¾ oz heavy cream - last because it will curdle if it sits too long

Shake, the ever loving hell out of it, with ice for 30 seconds - 1 min, the longer the better.

Pull your shaker a part -Double Strain (hawth/mesh) back into your shaker

DRY SHAKE - and shake the hell out of it again for another 30 seconds to 1 min. The longer the better

Collins glass out of the fridge, add a little soda water to the bottom and pour in shaker - no need to double strain.

Top it off with Soda/Bubbly Water FROM TIN

Let the drink settle in your fridge/freezer for 1 min

Clean up your area

Take your drink out, the head should rise

Garnish with a staw (paper) in the middle of the drink, if you made it well - it will stand straight up.

Join Jules’ Recipe

What do I need?

  • Gin, I like to use a floral gin here, try Empress 1908

  • Lemons - fresh lemon juice

  • Limes - fresh lime juice

  • Sugar and fresh lavender flowers for simple

  • Orange flower water

  • Eggs - egg white

  • Heavy cream, try getting a good heavy cream here like Straus or Alexandre

  • Soda water

  • Boston shaker - 28/18oz tin on tin

  • Hawthorn strainer & Mesh strainer

  • Jigger

  • Chilled Collins glass

How do I make it?

Lavender syrup:

Equal parts water + sugar about 1 cup for each and 3-4 lavender flowers

Big shaker add:

  • 1 egg white

  • 2oz gin

  • ½ oz creme de violette

  • ½ oz lime

  • ½ oz lemon

  • ¾ oz Lavender Simple syrup

  • 6 drops Orange flower water

  • Hit it with a few drops (2) of vanilla extract, per brads recipe

  • ¾ oz heavy cream

Now we are going to reverse dry shake here, i think it makes for an easier assembly.

Add ice and shake the f’ out of it, I’m talking like at least 1 minute.

Open that cocktail shaker and strain into the other side of the shaker so the ice does not go into the shaker.

Now, take a hand frother and froth the f’ out of it for at least 1 minute if not two.

No straining necessary here, just pour the mixture ¾ of the way into a tall collins glass.

Top with that soda water and float the remaining cocktail to lift the drink up.

Garnish with a fresh lavender flower and put a straw in that bad boy, pat yourself on the back, and enjoy

Top it after it settles if you don’t get it right away
